GRMC HOSPICE

Volunteer Program

Volunteers play an integral part of the Hospice support team and enhance the patient and family experience.  We are looking for caring, dedicated individuals to join our volunteer team and become an essential part of our mission to provide comfort and dignity to patients and their families in the areas we serve.

Volunteers are at the heart of our program, offering a special kind of support that profoundly affects the lives of those we serve. As a volunteer, you can choose from a variety of roles that fit your skills and interests, including:

  • Patient Companionship: Provide a calming presence, read aloud, listen to stories, play games, or simply sit with a patient to offer company and relieve loneliness.
  • Caregiver Respite: Give family members a much-needed break to run errands, rest, or care for themselves, knowing their loved one is safe.
  • Administrative and Office Support: Assist the Hospice team with essential behind-the-scenes tasks like data entry, preparing mailings, answering phones, and event support.
  • Specialized Services: If you have a special skill like pet therapy (with a certified pet), music therapy, haircutting, or providing bereavement support, consider sharing that skill with our patients.

While many find hospice work deeply fulfilling, we understand it can feel like a big step. We are dedicated to supporting our volunteers and ensuring you are well prepared for this important role.

  • Requirements:
    • Must be 18 years or older (for direct patient contact) and have a compassionate and non-judgmental attitude.
    • Be flexible and dependable.
    • Successfully pass a background check and TB screening.
    • Complete our comprehensive, free volunteer training program, which covers hospice philosophy, communication skills, grief support, and patient confidentiality.

(Optional but recommended) If you have experienced a recent loss, we recommend waiting a period before volunteering at the bedside.

  • Benefits:
    • Experience profound personal growth and find a sense of purpose by making a tangible difference in someone’s life.
    • Build meaningful relationships with patients, families, and fellow volunteers.
    • Enhance your resume with valuable skills in communication, empathy, and patient care.
    • Receive ongoing education and support as part of a caring team.

If you have the heart to help others, we invite you to take the next step. We have several options to get you started:
